I did a project where I studied all of the documentary shorts that MIFF programmed between 2004 and 2019 - mostly because a lot of people I knew seemed to be of the opinion that less and less Australian films were being programmed. I manually compiled all the data (because the MIFF archives are horrendous), and here's a bunch of stuff I found, that I've now animated. All achieved through RStudio, Illustrator, and After Effects.
Also, as it turns out - no, there's no statistically significant decrease in the percentage of Australian doco shorts programmed over time. In fact, if your MIFF doco short is Australian, you're more likely to take home the short doco prize. How? Trust me - I made a bunch of regression models.
